Drink of the Month

Paula's Porto Punch

Recipe by David Alan
The Tipsy Texan, Austin

This recipe is just right for Texas weather. Port provides the comforting strains of fall, while PTL and lime insert prickly notes of the heat that lingers. We like the nutty aromas in tawny port, but you can use ruby port if you prefer it.

  • 2 oz. Paula's Texas Lemon
  • ¾ oz. tawny Port
  • ¾ oz. fresh-squeezed lime juice
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
Shake all ingredients with ice in a mixing glass. Strain into a bitters-rinsed sipping glass.

Celebration sparkler

This drink is perfect for an aperitif before your Thanksgiving meal and also makes a classy greeting drink for holiday open houses. The pink color and bubbles add to the festivities.
  • 1 oz. Paula's Texas Orange
  • 1 oz. cranberry or pomegranate juice
  • Champagne
Combine the PTO and juice in a champagne flute. Top off with champagne. For best results, make sure all three ingredients are ice cold.

From Dale DeGroff's
The Essential Cocktail
Satan's Whiskers

This one just sounds right for a Halloween special. Give in to that little devil on your shoulder and mix up this color-appropriate drink for your party. Dale calls this a variation of the Bronx, one of the real old-time recipes.
  • 1 oz. gin
  • ½ oz. Italian sweet (red) vermouth
  • ½ oz. French dry (white) vermouth
  • ½ oz. PTO (substituted for Grand Marnier)
  • 1 oz. fresh-squeezed orange juice
  • Dash of Angostura or orange bitters
  • Orange peel for garnish
Combine the gin, vermouths, PTO, orange juice, and bitters in a mixing glass with ice and shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with the orange peel.

Drink Local cocktail contest open for entries

For the second year, Edible Austin's Eat Local week will feature a Drink Local cocktail contest. Open to pros and amateurs alike, requirements are to use local spirits and ingredients and be able to show up to prepare your drink in front of judges at the Dec. 6 event. We're biased, but we think your chances improve when using PTO and PTL to create great local drinks.

Omni Hotels to feature Texas Spirits

Omni Hotels throughout Texas are featuring Texas spirits in specialty cocktails, as well as Texas-sourced food and wines, through the end of the year. Paula's Texas Orange is featured in three of the cocktails, along with Dripping Springs and Tito's Vodkas and Treaty Oak and Railean rums.

Bonus recipe from The Essential Cocktail
French Martini

We've been having fun with this easy drinker lately and now have even more of a reason to mix it up: Hideous liqueur. Contrary to its name, Hideous has delicious natural red berry flavors and provides a similar taste profile as Chambord. The product is marketed out of Austin and is popular in downtown bars.
  • 1 oz. premium vodka
  • 1 oz. Hideous liqueur (substituted for Chambord)
  • 2 oz. unsweetened pineapple juice
Combine ingredients in a mixing glass with ice and shake very well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. (Note that the pineapple juice creates a lovely pink foam on top.)
